This unit recycles and revisits a lot of vocabulary seen in previous units, e.g. words for colours and simple objects and animals. Learners further practice giving short answers in response to direct questions.

Organizational moment

  • Teacher greets students; students respond to greeting and take their places.

Warming up

  • Teacher revises the days of the week and asks sts “What day is it today? What day was yesterday? What day will be tomorrow?”
  • Teacher asks sts about the weather – “What is the weather like today?”
  • Teacher nominates sts to answer “How are you?” question. Each student describes his/her mood saying “I am...”

Story time

  • Introduce sts the word “story” and check if they understand its meaning, if the word is new for the majority of sts ask them to write it down into their copybooks with transcription and translation
  • Inform sts about the topic of the lesson “Story time” and introduce the name of the story – “Hansel and Gretel”
  • Ask sts if they’ve ever heard or read this story
  • Demonstrate a PPP with flashcards illustrating the story (witch, fire, hungry, etc.)
  • Read words for sts and ask them to repeat the words in order to drill pronunciation
  • Nominate sts to read words for the class
  • Hand out stories to sts and ask them to look through it and try to read within 3 minutes as well as to pay attention to vocabulary given below
  • Ask if sts understood anything from the story
  • Read the story aloud for the sts and ask them to listen attentively and follow
  • Let sts know that the work will be continued next lesson

Ask sts to think about a couple of things they have learned/remembered at the lesson and share their ideas with the class (with great teacher support)

Give home task: to look through and try to learn as many words from the story “Hansel and Gretel” as sts can for the next lesson and also try to read the story themselves or with help of their parents
