This unit recycles and revisits a lot of vocabulary seen in previous units, e.g. words for colours and simple objects and animals. Learners further practice giving short answers in response to direct questions.

Teacher greets learners; learners respond to greeting and take their places.

Warming up

  • Teacher revises the days of the week and asks the learners: “What day is it today? What day was it yesterday? What day will be tomorrow?”
  • Teacher asks learners about the weather.
  • Teacher nominates learners to answer “How are you?” question. Each student describes his/her mood saying “I am...”

Happy Birthday

  • Teacher demonstrates flash cards with words on the topic “Birthday” and asks learners to repeat the words
  • Teacher sticks all flash cards on the board and asks learners to close their eyes
  • When learners close their eyes teacher turns one card over and asks learners to open their eyes and try to identify which word is missing (repeat 5-7 times)
  • Teacher splits the class into pairs and provides each pair with the cards. Pairs in turns close their eyes and turn one card over and identify which word is missing. Peer assessment is provided.
  • Teacher asks the learners what was easy and what words were difficult to remember. Teacher feedback.
  • Teacher gives learners cards with words to stick into copybooks; learners stick cards and read words to themselves within a minute
  • Teacher plays a video about a birthday party; learners watch the video and find objects relating to the topics
  • Teacher plays the video for the second time with pauses in order to ask “What’s this?”; learners should answer “This is a cake. This is a friend.”
  • Open class feedback: Teacher nominates learner to provide the answer. The rest of the class checks their answers.
